Edgar Miersch

Mein Name ist Edgar Miersch, ich bin 34 Jahre alt und bin Diplom Geologe, mein Studium habe ich an der TU Bergakademie Freiberg abgeschlossen. Während meines Praktikums möchte ich die Arbeitsweise in englischen Firmen und Betrieben kennen lernen, im Gegensatz zu Deutschland. Wenn ich nach Deutschland zurückkehre werde ich nach Hause zu meinen Eltern fahre und einige Tage Urlaub machen. In der Zukunft möchte ich meine musikalischen Fähigkeiten verbessern und genug Geld zum überleben verdienen. Meine Hobbys sind Musik, P.u.P Rollenspiele, Geschichte und Philosophie. Mich inspirieren Liedermacher wie Reinhardt Mai, Gerhard Gundermann und Folkbands wie die Dubliners. Meine Lebensphilosophie: “Alle Menschen sind gleich schlecht!” , “Wir sind alle nur Sklaven unserer Erinnerungen und Gefühle!”

Zur Vorbereitung
Zur Vorbereitung der Reise wurden einfach die wichtigen, notwendigen Sachen in einen Rollkoffer und die Kraxe gepackt, der Laptop mitgenommen und ab ging es... Die Reise verlief von Freiberg aus mit der Bahn zum Flughafen Altenburg und von dort aus mit der Billigfluglinie Ryan Air nach London Stansted, wo wir von Embrace abgeholt wurden. Von dort aus ging es mit dem Zug über die Victoria-Station zum Bahnhof West-Norwood. Als wir dann das Gepäck die Hügel hoch geschafft hatten, waren wir da.

Praktikum
Das Praktikum begann für mich am 24.05 um 8.00 bei der Firma Supply Direkt, deren Büro in der Nähe des Bahnhofs “Battersea Park” liegt. Die Arbeit beginnt um 8.00 Uhr, und ich komme dorthin (und zurück) mit der Eisenbahnlinie die von “West Norwood” Richtung “Victoria Station” führt. Die Firma Supply Direkt ist eine Catering Firma, welche individuell zusammengestelltes Essen an ihre Kunden liefert, in ihrem Büro gehen die Bestell-Anrufe ein. Die Mitarbeiter stellen dann die von den Kunden gewünschten Menüs am Computer zusammen und bestätigen die Aufträge. Der tägliche Hin- und Rückweg ist für mich relativ einfach, weil ich nicht umsteigen muss und schon vor Victoriastation aussteige, dadurch komme ich nicht so in die Rushhour. Was mich sehr erschreckt ist die Tatsache, das die stromführende Schiene der U-Bahn und Eisenbahn meistens vollkommen ungeschützt neben dem normalen Gleis liegt. In der Firma ist meine Position vollkommen unklar, wahrscheinlich einfach “Praktikant”. Meine Aufgabe ist es, im Internet Informationen über die in den Großräumen London und Liverpool vorhandenen Hotels und Jugendherbergen zusammenzutragen und so zu ordnen, dass sie später für eine Marktanalyse ausgewertet werden können. Meine bisherigen Leistungen bestehen in einer großen Excel-Tabelle in der die zusammengetragenen Daten gespeichert sind.

Englisch/ Praktikum
Mit dem Englischen habe ich die Erfahrung gemacht, das ich es gut verstehe, wenn der Sprecher direkt mit mir spricht, ich jedoch kaum etwas verstehe, was zwischen den “Einheimischen” gesprochen wird, wenn diese in ihrem Slang, zu schnell und von mir abgewandt sprechen. Dazugelernt habe ich vor allem in der Benutzung der englischen MS Office Programme. Außerdem habe ich Kenntnisse gewonnen über verschiedene Einzelheiten in der Hotel- und Jugendherbergsbranche, z.B. welche Einrichtungsgegenstände in englischen Hotels und Jugendherbergen Standard sind und welche nicht.



Wohnen/ Freizeit
Das Zusammenleben wird von uns gemeinsam organisiert und die häuslichen Pflichten unter den Hausbewohnern aufgeteilt, so dass jeder mal dran ist. Das Zusammenleben von Menschen mit verschiedenen sozialen Hintergründen und Erfahrungen auf engstem Raum ist nicht immer einfach und konfliktfrei., jedoch kann man durch Diskussionen und Ansprechen vieles aus dem Weg räumen und gemeinsames Essen, Feiern und Freizeitaktivitäten verbinden die Leute. Für die Freizeitaktivitäten finden wir uns oft zu Gruppen zusammen, die einen gehen ins Museum, die Anderen in den Pub, wieder Andere gehen gerne Schoppen oder in Konzerte.



My name is Edgar Miersch. I'm 34 years old and am a graduate geologist. I have completed my studies at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. During my internship I would like to learn about the working practices of British companies and establishments, in contrast to Germany. If I go back to Germany I will go home to my parents and make a few days of vacation. In the future I would like to make to improve my musical skills and enough money to survive. My life philosophy: "All men are equally bad," "We are all just slaves to our memories and emotions," In preparation for the trip, I just put the important, necessary things in a rolling suitcase and in my backpack. Then I get my laptop and went on...



The trip went from Freiberg by train to the airport Altenburg and from there whith the low cost carrier Ryan Air to the Airport London Stansted. There we were picked up by Embrace. From Airport London Stan we took the train on the Victoria station to station West Norwood. When we got the luggage had made up the hill we were there, in the new home. The internship began for me on the 24.05 at 8:00 at the company Direct Supply, whose office is located near the trainstation Battersea Park. The work starts at 8.00 clock and I get there (and back) with the railway line from the West Norwood trainstation to Victoria trainstation. The company Direct Supply is a catering company that provides individually selected food to their customers.

In her office the customers call, and the staff put together the desired menus on the computer and then confirm the orders. The daily round trip for me is relatively easy, because I do not have to change trains and get out before Victoria Station, so I'm not in the rush hour. What frightens me, is the fact, that the current-carrying rail of the subway and railway is usually completely unprotected. In the company my position is completely unclear, probably I´m just the "trainee". My responsibility is to collect the existing informations of hotels and hostels in the Greater London and Liverpool in the internet and to arrange them in such a way that they can be used later for a market analysis.

My achievements are a large Excel spreadsheet in which the collected data are stored. With the English, I have had the experience, I understand it well when the speaker speaks directly to me, I understand, however, hardly something that is spoken between the "natives" when they in their slang, speak to quickly and turned away from me. I have learned especially in the use of English MS Office programs. I have also gained knowledge about various details in the hotel and hostel buisines, eg the furnishings in English hotels and hostels are standard and which not. Living together is being organized jointly by us and shared the household responsibilities among the tenants, so that everyone has it in mind.

The coexistence of people with different social backgrounds and experiences in a confined space is not always easy and free of conflict. But you can clear through discussion and response from much of the way and shared meals, parties and activities connect the people. For leisure activities, we often find ourselves together into groups that go to a museum or in the pub, others like to go to concerts or go shopping.
